What it is

Win-back / reactivation rate measures the share of lapsed subscribers who return and resubscribe within a given period. Formally: resubscribed lapsed users ÷ lapsed users.

How to calculate it

Count all users who had previously cancelled or churned and then restarted an active subscription within the measurement window. Divide by the total number of users who were in a lapsed state at the start of that window (or who entered a lapsed state during it — define consistently and document the convention). Express as a percentage.

Why it matters

Win-back is one of the cheapest re-monetization levers available to a subscription business. A lapsed user has already cleared the awareness and onboarding hurdles; the marginal cost to reach them via email or push is near-zero compared to acquiring a new user. Brands and apps that run systematic win-back programs — timed offers, personalized prompts, feature announcements — find a material slice of churned users return before the next billing cycle. Under-measuring this channel means under-investing in it.

How to read it

There is no established published benchmark for win-back / reactivation rate across consumer subscription apps. App-store dynamics, category loyalty, and churn reasons vary too widely for any cross-app figure to be meaningful.

As an Omega Point estimate — a directional, first-principles figure, not a measured one — a reasonable conservative range for an actively maintained win-back program in a B2C subscription app is roughly 3–15% of lapsed users reactivating within 30–90 days of lapse. The low end reflects passive, low-touch outreach; the high end reflects a well-timed, personalised sequence sent to users who churned recently rather than years ago. Treat this as an internal baseline: track your own win-back cohorts over time and measure whether program changes move the needle.
