What it is
% of DAU monetized measures what share of a product's daily active user base actually generates revenue on any given day. Formula: monetized users ÷ DAU, expressed as a percentage. "Monetized" means generating revenue via any mechanism: paying subscriber, in-app purchase, ad impression that meets a revenue threshold, or similar — define consistently per the product's revenue model.
How to calculate it
On a given day, count the number of unique users who generated at least one revenue event (subscription active, IAP completed, ad impression served and counted). Divide by total DAU for that day. For trend analysis, compute as a 7-day or 30-day rolling average to smooth day-of-week variance.
Why it matters
For ad-supported or freemium media products, the gap between total engagement and monetized engagement is the clearest picture of monetization coverage. A product with 10M DAU but 2% monetization is far more exposed to revenue concentration than one at 8M DAU and 10% monetization. The metric also surfaces whether product changes — new features, paywalls, ad-load adjustments — are widening or narrowing the monetized base, independently of ARPU changes. It is the leading structural question: how thin or thick is the monetization layer across the active user base?
How to read it
There is no established published benchmark for % of DAU monetized across media or consumer apps. The metric's range is driven too heavily by business model (pure advertising vs. hard paywall vs. freemium IAP) for a cross-product band to be meaningful.
As an Omega Point estimate — reasoning from the structure of the metric and publicly observable patterns in consumer app monetization — a conservative directional range is 1–15% of DAU for typical B2C media and freemium products. Ad-supported products where every user generates ad revenue sit toward the high end; hard-paywall products tracking only paid subscribers as "monetized" sit toward the low end; freemium IAP products typically fall in the 2–5% range based on well-known patterns in mobile gaming (where some published figures exist as analogues). This estimate is directional; your actual target should be set against your own prior periods and business model design.
